My husband has recently prided himself in being a great negotiator. He used to think Melissa was crazy for always haggling and asking for better deals with everything she did. But then he got a taste of it a few times and even took a class in law school focusing on negotiating in the legal world. Then he was sold. I think he even wanted me to ask for a deal on canned goods at the grocery store. He has always been what we would call frugal so this became a great game for him. Melissa is his inspiration.
So, we were hopeful that the Rangers would make the playoffs and bought four playoff tickets earlier. Well they obviously didn't. So do they just refund the money? No. A salesman calls and puts the pressure on the buyer to go ahead and apply that money to season tickets or a 10-pack. Well, this is right up Mike's alley. The guy wanted to "throw in" a few extra tickets to premium games, etc. Mike didn't commit so the guy called the next week to "throw in" a few more things like Dallas Stars tickets. Still, no bite. But then Mike had the ultimate lightbulb negotiating moment...did he ask for more Stars tickets? Mavs tickets? Free money? No.
See, a few months ago, we went to a Rangers game in a nice box, complements of Melissa and Derek. That night happened to be nightlight giveaway night. I was almost 8 months pregnant so Mike pleaded with the lady at the time for a nightlight for the in utero baby since they were only for kids under 14. Even though she looked like a sweet, old lady, she did not budge.
So, in the final negotiation moments with the Rangers salesman, Mike lamented his nightlight story and asked if they still had some. They did. And that's how we have a Rangers 10 pack with an extra 4 tickets to any game, 2 Dallas Stars tickets......and a Texas Rangers nightlight. Well played, sir. Well played. You finally got your nightlight.

Woo hoo! I'm glad I am an inspiration to someone. He should really thank Mama Mags (aka Queen of all things cheap!)
Bravo Mike... BRAVO!
